1. Find the app that is already running
The built-in Dock marks running apps. Use it to return to an app, or use the system app-switching shortcut if your hands are on the keyboard. If you prefer a bottom taskbar with pinned and open apps visible together, Sill's free taskbar shows running apps and marks the active one.
2. Pick the window, not just the app
Opening an app can leave you with several documents or browser windows. In Sill, turn off Combine windows by app to give each window a titled button. This needs Accessibility permission because Sill must identify and focus individual windows. If you prefer one button per app, leave grouping on.
With Sill Pro, hover over an app button to see window thumbnails. Click the preview you need, or close one window from its preview. Thumbnail capture needs Screen Recording permission; the permission guide explains why.
3. Keep frequent apps close
Pin apps you open regularly and put them in an order you remember. That saves repeated searching through a large application list. For less frequent apps, open Sill's launcher, type the name, and press Return. Pinning and launcher search are free features.
4. Clear the desktop when you need it
When windows cover the desktop, Sill's far-right Show Desktop control minimizes them together. Click it again to restore them. This is useful when you need a file on the desktop and want to return to the same windows afterward.
5. Choose where the taskbar appears
On a single display, keep the bar visible or turn on auto-hide if you want more space. If you work across multiple displays, Sill Pro can show a taskbar on every connected display. The free version keeps a taskbar on one display. Compare free and Pro before deciding whether that fits your setup.
Start with the simplest setup
Try the free taskbar first: pin a few apps, choose grouped or individual window buttons, and adjust icon size. The 30-day Pro trial starts on first launch without an account or card, so you can test previews and multiple-display behavior before subscribing. Download Sill and follow the installation steps.
